Ikageng – RDP houses build with Oconbrick

28 July 2009

Oconbrick is proudly associated with the RDP housing development in Ikageng close to Potchefstroom, where 20 of the 1500 houses, 45m² each are currently under construction for the community that has taken a strong stance insisting on quality and sustainability.

Mariana Lamont of Oconbrick explains that sustainability of low cost & affordable housing is based on three essential criteria; social acceptability, affordability and energy efficiency. In this respect Oconbrick’s new high quality clay wide brick is the answer to all three.

  • Oconbrick clay wide brick offers a high quality finish with no further maintenance required

  • Oconbrick clay wide brick is a cost effective building material with financial savings emanating mainly from significant time savings during construction of a house and with no requirement for plastering and painting of outside walls. This delivers an approximate 25% savings on the traditional bag wash & paint method

  • Clay brick material is more energy efficient with regards to embodied energy with a high thermal resistance to cool and heat, making it an ideal natural insulation material

Ikageng will be using Oconbrick new clay Maxi brick in the near future which could be the answer to further savings to RDP housing developments.
